Human Leagued

The Human League formed in 1977 in Sheffield by Ian Craig Marsh & Martyn Ware Philip Oakey joined as singer later leaving his job as a hospital porter! The name comes from a science-fiction board game called "Star Force".  The group’s first gig was at the local Sheffield Art College, soon another member was to join - Adrian Wright - In June 1978, they release their first single "Being Boiled"/"Circus Of Death", recorded in Mono.            

After supporting and touring with various bands they released their first album, "Reproduction", produced by themselves and Colin Thurston, and a single "Empire State Human" 1980 and other releases would follow, "Holiday '80", featuring a version of Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll Parts 1 & 2"/"Nightclubbing", "Dancevision", "Marianne" and a new version of "Being Boiled".

A second album is released "Travelogue" with a re-releasing of "Empire State Human", with "Introducing" and "Only After Dark"/"Toyota City".

In November 1980, Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware leave The Human League, so now only Philip Oakey and Adrian Wright with the name are left, so Phil swoop into action to recruit some new talent, and stumbles accross 17-year old Susan Sulley & 18-year-old Joanne Catherall who join the band and prompty go on tour! But as the girl just have vocal it is decided to bring in a musician "Ian Burden" In February 1981 "Boys and Girls".                  

They begin working with Producer Martin Rushent, and their next single, "Sound Of The Crowd" is released in May. It becomes a hit, followed by "Love Action" & "Open Your Heart" as Jo Callis also joins the band. In October they also release their third album, "Dare", and release the single that would put them on the international map "Don't You Want Me". "Mirror Man followed in "82 &  "(Keep Feeling) Fascination" in May 1983 both are hit around the world. In May 1984, the album, "Hysteria" is finally released.

The first single, "The Lebanon" is released, and is the first Human League single to contain guitars. It is followed up with "Life On Your Own" and "Louise", but these singles chart in the U.K.         

Jo Callis leaves the group. Phil then collaborates with Giorgio Moroder, on the soundtrack to the movie "Electric Dreams", with the single "Together In Electric Dreams" In "86 "Crash" album is released and the hits "Human" , "I Need Your Loving" and "Love Is All That Matters" are hits. Jim Russell joins as drummer/synthesist. A greatest hits album is released in 1988, next album along was "Romantic?"  with the singles "Heart Like A Wheel" and "Soundtrack To A Generation". Group members now include Russell Dennett and Neil Sutton. Adrian Wright having left to pursue a movie-making career.

Between 1996-1998 another 3 greatest hits albums are released in different formats, with the following years seeing the band get more involved with live scene and yearly tours.
